FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS


On August 12 a movie entitled Florence Foster Jenkins will be released. It is a story about the namesake’s career as an opera singer (?). She is played by Meryl Streep and features Hugh Grant. You may recall hearing her on a CD at Liberty Hall as she was featured there.

 She had a remarkable career. She was a Park Avenue matron who would rent Carnegie Halll and give recitals with her accompanist, Cosmo McMoon. (That’s his real name.) She was awful and her pitch was off. One got invited, no charge. One of the criteria for an invitation was that you didn’t laugh.

It should make fun entertainment.

Reminds me of Charles Foster Kane's mistress Susan Alexander in Citizen Kane who becomes his second wife. He pushes her to sing opera even though she’s not a particularly talented singer (No Pipes!). Wrack up another Oscar win for Meryl.

I was just listening to my copy of her work. You were decades of Meryl Streep in recognizing a great story.
