I returned home tonight from Charlottesville and found the family bottle of vermouth on my counter (yes, the same bottle that lived at 111 as long as Nan did). I was disappointed to discover that Elaine was not making martinis but happy to find out that she was using the vermouth in a saute of beef recipe from Julia Child. The beef and accompanying potatoes were excellent but the 1/3 cup called for in the recipe nearly finished the bottle. I believe this was the single largest pour experienced by this bottle in its lifetime.
The bottle is down to about 2 ounces of vermouth - enough to last another 7 years if not used for cooking.

I intend to pass my bottle on to Maggie once I enter martini Valhalla.
What is vermouth?
